Reference Checks That Actually Work
Most references are collected in a way that guarantees a favourable answer. A small change in method changes the output entirely.

The Structural Flaw
A reference nominated by the candidate, contacted by the recruiter and asked whether they would recommend the candidate produces one answer. It is not evidence.
Four Corrections
Each is straightforward and materially improves the result.
- Speak to at least one referee the candidate did not nominate
- Ask about specific situations, not general qualities
- Confirm the referee's actual reporting relationship and dates
- Ask what the candidate found difficult, and listen to the pause
Documenting It
Record who said what, in what capacity, and on what date. A reference that cannot be attributed cannot be relied upon later.
