How to Choose an Investigation or Due Diligence Firm

The firms that promise the most are usually the ones proposing methods you cannot defend.

What to Ask

Six questions separate a professional practice from a supplier of claims.

  • What exactly is in scope, and what is excluded?
  • Which sources will be used, and are they lawful?
  • How is a finding corroborated before it is reported?
  • How are limitations reported?
  • Who will see the file, and how is it stored and destroyed?
  • What will you refuse to do?

Warning Signs

Guaranteed findings, offers of call records or bank statements, fixed prices for undefined scope, and a reluctance to put method in writing.

A Reasonable Expectation

A written mandate, a defined timeline, a report that distinguishes fact from inference, and a firm that says plainly what it could not establish.
